Instructors and Assistants

Katy Dillon, Instructor and Group Director

Katy started taking Highland dance lessons in 1992 along with her sister Amie. They were taught by Wendy Fennell in Pittsburgh, PA. Katy received her Associate level teaching certification from the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD) in 1998 to become WV’s first certified Highland dance teacher at the age of 16. She completed her Member's certification in 2001.

Katy has organized hundreds of performances for the dance group and has trained five WV dancers to become certified dance instructors through the BATD (with top level scores). Her dancers have competed and won awards at the Southeast Regional Championship, the United States Inter-Regional Championship, and the BATD Sadie Simpson Scholarship Competition.

Aside from teaching dance, Katy has a B.A. in Elementary Education and a M.A. in School Counseling. Currently she works as an Assistant Director for the Davis & Elkins College Upward Bound Program. 

Kaylea McCutcheon, Instructor

Kaylea completed her Associate's level teaching exam through the BATD in 2014. She is an active competitor and was 4th runner up at the Southeast Regional Championship in 2017.  Kaylea graduated in May of 2019 from Pierpont Community and Technical College and now works as a radiologic technologist. She teaches classes in the Clarksburg, WV area.

Ellie McCutcheon, Instructor

Ellie completed her Member's level teaching exam in 2018. She competes at the Premier/Championship level. She instructs her own Beginner/Novice level dancers and teaches private lessons for the group. Ellie has a true love of Highland theory and was proud to receive first place in the written exam at the 2013 BATD Conference and Sadie Simpson Scholarship Competition in Niagara Falls. Ellie is a junior at Davis & Elkins College and instructs the newly formed Davis & Elkins College Highland Dancers.

Evelyn Bennett, Instructor

Evelyn is an Associate Member of the BATD and plans to complete her Member's Exam in the summer of 2021. She enjoys competing and is currently the Southeast Regional Champion for her age group. Evelyn placed 3rd runner up at the USIR in Gettysburg in 2018 and 4th runner up at the USIR in Las Vegas in 2019. She was also nominated to participate in the Sadie Simpson Scholarship Competition for four consecutive years. Evelyn was selected to perform in the 2020 Edinburgh Military Tattoo (canceled due to Covid) and plans to audition for more tattoos around the world in the future. She currently assists with classes for the WVHD and teaches her own Highland classes online.

Gabby Pealer, Assistant Instructor

Gabby assists Katy with Primary/Beginner classes and plans to complete her Members Exam with the BATD in 2020. Gabby was 4th runner up (and alternate for the USIR) in the Southeast in 2019 and participated in the Sadie Simpson Scholarship Competition in Washington, D.C. the same year. Gabby attends Davis & Elkins College and was awarded a scholarship to be a member of the D&E Highland Dancers. It is Gabby's goal to continue competing through college and to participate in tattoos and other Highland dance travel opportunities.
