Katy Dillon, Instructor and Group Director
Katy started taking Highland dance lessons in 1992 along with her sister Amie. They were taught by Wendy Fennell in Pittsburgh, PA. Katy received her Associate level teaching certification from the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD) in 1998 to become WV’s first certified Highland dance teacher at the age of 16. She completed her Member's level certification in 2001.
Katy has organized hundreds of performances for the dance group and has trained five WV dancers to become certified dance instructors through the BATD (with top level scores). Her dancers have competed and won awards at the Southeast Regional Championship, the United States Inter-Regional Championship, and the BATD Sadie Simpson Scholarship Competition.
Aside from teaching dance, Katy has a B.A. in Elementary Education and a M.A. in School Counseling. Currently she works as an Assistant Director for the Davis & Elkins College Upward Bound Program.
Kaylea McCutcheon, Instructor
Kaylea completed her Associate's level teaching exam through the BATD in 2014. She is an active competitor and was 4th runner up at the Southeast Regional Championship in 2017. Kaylea teaches her own classes of Primary and Beginner dancers and she also enjoys choreographing dances for the group. Kaylea is enrolled in Pierpont Community and Technical College where she is studying radiologic technology.
Ellie McCutcheon, Instructor
Ellie completed her Member's level teaching exam in 2018. She competes at the Premier/Championship level. She instructs Beginner level dancers and teaches private lessons for the group. Ellie has a true love of Highland theory and was proud to receive first place in the written exam at the 2013 BATD Conference and Sadie Simpson Scholarship Competition in Niagara Falls. It is her goal to become West Virginia's first Highland dance judge. She is excited to begin her freshman year at Davis & Elkins College this fall where she will instruct the newly formed Davis & Elkins College Highland Dancers!
Evelyn Bennett, Assistant Instructor
Evelyn assists Katy with Primary/Beginner classes and plans to complete her Associate exam when she turns 16. She enjoys competing and is currently the Southeast Regional Champion for her age group for the third year in a row. Evelyn placed 3rd runner up at the USIR and 4th runner up in the North American Championship in 2018. She has also been nominated to participate in the Sadie Simpson Scholarship Competition for the past three years.
